On the heels of our first win...we get worked! Whatever "plan"
Trocadero had for this race backfired, bigtime. Aside from the rain, counter attacks and missing the constant bridging to the break, that was at least 12 strong, we couldn't control the group. Casey was able to bridge to the break early, but only having one guy up seriously put the odds against us in the break...Jack was putting in monster efforts trying to quell the attempts to bridge up. Mantel and Jack at a few points looked as if they were going to put together a decent bridge, but the GDVC guys with them wouldn't work...the rest of us held on to the yo-yo-ing attacks and counter attacks.
The few bright spots in the rainy day were, Jack and I winning the first "King of the Hill" sprint...which set off the flurry of attacks while we were trying to recover, great timing...sucking your lungs through your nose watching team after team send guys up and not being able to do "anything" about it. With three laps to go a $60 Prime went up for the field...so, out of pure pride Jack and I decided we HAD TO GET THE PRIME!! I led out down the back and Jack kept telling me to stay on the front, I had nothing left when we got half way up the backside, but no one wanted to come around...In Jack's words..."It was the slowest lead out in history..." Thanks a lot, brother!! But, it worked, somehow!! Jack sprinted up the last climb and didn't let anyone come around...swell job. Casey DID get in the break, where he was severely outnumbered. After a three man group attacked on the last lap, Casey waited for Kipper and another to go, went with them and was sitting pretty handsome for 4th, till momentum carried him to the front just before the sprint...he was outmaneuvered, and brought in a VERY RESPECTABLE (considering the shelling we took) 6th place...the only top ten we could manage.
Big props to Casey and Jack who were tireless, giving Trocadero the only results not to hang our heads about. Jeff, Scott, Chris and I (Roeder unluckily flatted out) gotta move on to the next race...
Masters' Category 4/5
The masters 4's again brought out a large field, 60+ riders for the third race in a row. Todd, Dave L and I were hoping the rain would wait as our races aren't notoriosly crash-free even in the best conditions. No great surprises early in the race, just the usual attacks. Todd and I nicely controlled things near the front and chased the attacks down as needed. Todd narrowly missed getting 'taken out' twice as people tried to come around the group in sketchy areas (You mean there was a curb there those first 20 laps?!?!) Aaron (Velocity) tried another solo breakaway with about 7 laps to go and we covered it so he sat up. But then, with about 4 laps to go, he did it again and when weren't right at the front and those who were there forgot that he won GDVC 1 in a similar way so they let him go. We held our own in the field sprint and ended up 7th(me) and 8th(Todd) and we could have done even better if we hadn't accidently gotten on the wheel of a lapped rider who must not have noticed the field charging at him as he coasted across the finish.
